BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
The Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) honours the late Lorrell B. Bruce, a Jamaican, for his significant contributions to the founding, growth and development of the regional body for credit union leagues. As a dedicated volunteer, Bruce’s name was synonymous with the Caribbean Credit Union Movement from 1956 to 1980. He began as the secretary of the West Indies Conference of Credit Societies, a precursor to the CCCU, and became its first President upon its founding in 1972. Bruce’s commitment shaped the evolution of the organization, and he served as President until his retirement in 1980. He played a crucial role in establishing numerous credit unions in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean and was the President of the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League from 1978-1980. In recognition of his service, the Jamaica League established an annual scholarship in his name. Additionally, Bruce was the Jamaican government’s ambassador to Washington, DC, in the 1970s and was a strong advocate for education.
